Spray Painting Furniture: A quickie value creator

You can choose any color that tickles your fancy for your furniture although the favorite of designers everywhere is always basic black.

Want a quick and dirty home improvement trick with “Ka-Pow” results: Spray Paint!  I have spray painted everything from my fireplace doors (ugly gold to stylish black) to photo frames (matchey-matchey for a nice coordinated look) and of course, furniture.  The process is very simple and something anyone can do with a couple of extra hours of free time.

Steps to spray paint:

  1. Clean and lightly sand the furniture or item then dust.
  2. Select a well ventilated area to do your spraying.  the spray will fly so cover surfaces within a 3 foot area with plastic.  Garages are perfect.  Consider mass spraying a couple of items at a time so can maximize your prepped space!
  3. With some sort of gloves on your hands and standing 1 foot away from the furniture, spray the paint on in wide arcs: avoid spraying too close and getting drips!
  4. let first coat dry (aka grab a beer & chat with a friend).  Apply second coat, same as first.
  5. If what you are painting is wood – seal wooden furniture with a clear spray polyurethane.

While I have friends that will spray paint anything, my personal successes have all been with wood and chrome type materials:  Wicker and furniture are my personal favorites.
