Kitchen Remodel: Achieve a Unique & Timeless Appeal

Cabinets of different heights with fewer uppers create a unique look

Cabinets of different heights with fewer uppers create a unique look

Remodeling a kitchen can be a challenge even for the best designers.  To achieve a classic and unique look it is often necessary to take a few chances, soapstone counters and a tin backsplash are just a couple of the items that help make this kitchen really pop.   To get the full skinny on what makes this kitchen unique, we went straight to the horses mouth.  Kevin Ritter, the designer, owner and cabinet maker of Timeless Kitchens shared with us a couple of his tricks.

Fewer upper cabinets at inconsistent heights:

“We started out as furniture makers – we approach a kitchen layout from that point of view: Larger cabinets; furniture foot to the floor; avoid running upper cabinets straight to the wall….

Consider everything on countertops before granite:

Ritter used soapstone countertops for this kitchen, even carving the sink out of the same solid block of stone.  Other options include wood, caesar stone, cement… think out of the box and let your imagination flow.  Finally, don’t let anyone talk you out of a soapstone b/c its too soft – full on bunk!

Tin backsplash for a vintage look:

Tin is easy to clean & easy to maintain but will develop its own character over time and offers a clean, country look with an overall ”vintage” feel.

Final Do’s and Don’ts for a Timeless Kitchen Remodel:

  • Don’t ever let someone tell you not to use soapstone or wood because its soft.
  • Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t use wood floors in a kitchen.
  • Don’t choose the cheapest appliances because they are the cheapest.
  • If higher end cabinetry is not in the budget for the entire kitchen – use less expensive cabinetry on the perimeter and add a unique and/or contrasting type of cabinetry for the island.
  • Don’t spread your budget too thin, cut the number of cabinets before going to an inferior product
  • Do take time to design your kitchen before jumping into the project
  • Do consider different colors on your kitchen cabinetry for a quality look
  • And then there’s that old adage which kind of rings true: “You get what you pay for…”
  • Before - Not bad but not standout!

The kitchen you have pics of is obviously too small, but how do you feel about library ladders in the kitchen area? If the ceiling’s are high enough they make a great aesthetic contribution as well as being functional. Would be great to see some pics of a kitchen with this incorporated into it.

    • I would argue that this kitchen is not too small … Rather, it is well laid out for the space that it occupies. I noticed you work for a library ladders company… Send me any pics you have of ladders in a kitchen and if they work for this blog (I.e. They meet our strict groovy and funky requirements), then we will be happy to run them.
